At the dawn of the new decade in 2020, we look back and have witnessed many so-called technology trends died as soon as they started. Companies fail due lack of vision and innovation, particularly in an industry that is constantly updating itself.

We have also seen a rise of small and medium enterprises are created plenty of new developments following the flow of the current technology and innovation. New demands and opportunities are created to suit different tastes in the global market.

In the year of 2020, we look forward to these promising technological leaps:

1. Artificial Intelligence, Hello Rosie, Good bye Alexa!

From the first industrial robot Unimate in 1954 to the Asimo and Alexa and Siri of our time. Transformative technology continues to evolve. Companies have been using AI services to improve and streamline their business operations. As this technology continues to grow and more complex tasks are being programmed, we expect more offerings from different providers that create applications and services for a wide variety of tasks. Someday we will not just have an AI for simple things like turning on and off devices but also robots who can do household chores like Rosie from the Jetsons. Neat, right?

2. 5G Network

2019 was the year of 5G network, although the access and usage are still not widely available, this connection is said to be 100 times faster than the 4G. With the demand of faster connectivity and stable connections on the rise, the transition to the 5G technology is a must especially in this digital era. We expect a wave of new mobile phones and data plans that provide a super fast connection, and with the 5G technology, we will be able to stream high quality movies and music even on the go.

3. Autonomous Driving

It seems just like yesterday when we got so excited with the Lexus 2054, an automatic car in the movie Minority Report in 2002. Although full automatic cars are still not a reality in 2020, we can foresee the near future of autonomous driving not just for private cars, but for also other means of travel such as ships and trucks. As mentioned in #1, the advancements in artificial intelligence provides car companies such as Tesla to create vehicles that are capable of automated braking and lane changes with manual human control. The company is said to develop a fully autonomous vehicle this year and this development create a massive change on our roads, infrastructure and also with current road laws.

4. Personalized and Predictive Medicine

As we continue the research on human genetics and with the breakthrough in medical technology, we’ve learned a great deal about ourselves. We understand why certain diseases develop and the relevant vaccines or medication to prevent and cure them. With the ability to capture data from MRI’s and simple wearable devices such as smart watches, we can monitor ourselves and have the data needed to predict and treat health issues even before any symptoms appear.

5. Computer Vision (Camera)

The advancement of digital imagery in both commerce and the military has already paved a way for our devices to identify objects, places and people from simple visual images. This technology offers a great usage not just for personal and homeland security but also for Industrial industry to detect equipment failures and defective products. Nowadays, many smartphones carry a face recognition feature which can also be used in the future in many areas, for example, to lessen the hassle in certain places like airport, embassies and more.

6. Extended Reality

The extended reality refers to the technology that is being used to create an immersive digital experience such as virtual, augmented and mixed reality. The virtual reality is a kind of technology that integrates the user to his/her own reality by creating a 360 degree environment which he or she can see and hear. The augmented reality is the use of Snapchat Application where it uses a digital element to a live view using the smart phone camera. The mixed reality is simply the combination of both worlds which dramatically improve its digital experience. In 2020, extended reality will be presented by new consoles like Playstation 5 (Sony) and Scarlett (Microsoft), which will surely bring even more digital breakthrough.

The advancement and introduction of the blockchain will continue to bring a huge impact in the entire financial industry. Blockchain, a kind of digital ledger use to record transaction under a unique record and history, is already used by big companies such as Walmart, IBM, FedEx etc, it is starting to attract many other firms as well. Even Facebook will launch an app named Libra based on blockchain technology and this will surely will cause some relevance.
