The Rise of the Nomadic CEO

As Richard Branson the man behind the Virgin Brand quoted “One day offices will be a thing of the past”.

People get to choose how they live. It’s either you live to work or you work to live. Or you mix it all up and get the best out of it without getting burned out. Having witnessed some of my peers suffered a burnout, and having experienced “Severe Adrenal Fatigue” (an elegant name for burnout) myself, I have been trying to work on my wellbeing, my family and my happiness. My stress components were, being the CEO of my firm, keeping a semi-professional career as a runner and triathlete, having frustrations of not being with my kids due to ever-ending traveling and the construction of my dream resorts, Kapuhala Thailand and Kapuhala Sicily.

All of my working arrangement had to be reorganized. Starting from the routine of my life, how I work, where I work. I decided to be a nomadic CEO and took all my daily tasks out of the office. I self-trained to work anywhere with my computer and wifi, and I trained my employees to do so. Our next board meeting will be at different Kapuhala premises, all with spectacular sea-views — in different countries!

Below are my five critical tips and habits to keep your body healthy inside and out:

  1. Develop a routine and do your best to stick with it

Resist the urge to stay in bed, fire up your laptop to get to work. Instead of taking time to dress as if you are going to an office, keep your routine for your work day, start and end time and include breaks at home.

2. Exercise and make a schedule

Get out of the house if you need to and start walking and running, block out time for a personal trainer or use an online app to do yoga or pilates. Just be sure to book it in your calendar, so you actually exercise!

3. Configure your work environment

Having a proper work environment is vital. Dedicate a space in your home, that is just for working, not an area that is repurposed later in the day.

4. Eat healthy food

Part of the benefit of working remotely is the ability to have 100% control over the food that you eat. You can stock your kitchen with healthy meals or snacks that provide you with the necessary energy boost.

5. Make plans

Ensure you take some time to be purposeful with your work setup.

Ever since I became a nomadic CEO, my cognitive abilities are through the roof, work efficiency skyrocketed, creative power boosted. My involvement in meetings are kept to those that are really important to me. I continue to achieve my work success in a social and healthy environment, as move, eat, live are also the pillars of the Kapuhala business.

In the long term, being completely nomadic has its challenges. The everyday normal things such as kids, school, friends, and other factors might need solutions out of the ordinary and this lifestyle is not for everybody.

The effects of re-wiring, at least short term, can lead to long term positive effects and has definitely made me a happier person. With the nomadic lifestyle, it cultivates connections to people, places and purpose.
