The Rise of the Nomadic Entrepreneur and the “Kapuhala Ecosystems”
Digital Nomads is a term that is often associated with bloggers or web developers, but nomadic entrepreneurship is actually a broader concept that is adopted by many people of different background and occupations.
I’ve seen it first hand by running our two boutique hotels that appeal to this demographic.
For many years, my wife and I have dreamt of moving to different parts of the world. I have been an investor, financier and entrepreneur all my life, I founded several companies, exited some, mentored others and try to stay constantly active in the world of global business. I carry my values and vision for the companies I create, join or mentor and this vision comes with me. Wherever I am.
Sometimes I question to myself, if the vision is inside us, the operation is online, why do we need to stay in one place? With the rising trend to smartwork even way before Covid, CEO and senior managers are moving around doing conference calls in different parts of the world. Some of them came to Kapuhala Koh Samui. They would stay a few days in our beautiful tents in the middle of Thai jungle, set up their “offices” next to the pool and stay there all day. At night they go out, or they stay with us to eat, their jobs didn’t stop and never had to.
When we decided to create Kapuhala, the idea was to make a few hotels with sport facilities for the sport lovers (ie. me) and amazing restaurants for the healthy foodies (ie. my wife) and a cultural centre for people to meet and exchange ideas. All our ideas were then translated into our brand and our logo, which consists of three circles that represent Move, Eat, Live.
After twenty four hardworking months, our hotels in Koh Samui and Sicily are in full operation and quickly becoming a hotspot a natural ecosystem for nomadic entrepreneurs, people who want to take a break but not fully disconnect from their jobs, which are now encouraged to be done remotely due to the pandemic. These nomadic entrepreneurs have one thing in common: they tend to be highly cultured individuals who understand the importance of eating well and doing sports, and everyone enjoys great conversations with like-minded individuals. In Kapuhala Sicily, everyone is requested to sit down to have dinner at the same time in order to maximise social interactions. We’ve had the chance to welcome plenty business leaders, spiritual gurus and forward thinkers in both locations and by the end of the night, everyone ends up at sitting together chatting into the late hours over glasses of red wine.
In this not-so-typical year of 2020, we met some amazing guests, from travel bloggers, entrepreneurs, financiers to yogis and foodies. Kapuhala fills the social void that nomadic entrepreneurs are looking for: that friendly, intellectually stimulating interaction that a traditional work arrangement without distance constraint is able to provide. For me personally, my ultimate dream is to have all the curious minds here, together we work out, have dinners, launch new business and projects, create hackathons and in the best of the cases “collective flow experiences”. We’ve set a “99% chance rule” — anyone stepping into any of the Kapuhala locations he/she will have a 99% chance to meet forward thinkers, curious minds, business leaders, fitness enthusiasts, biohackers and spiritual gurus.
By creating a space with all the necessary elements to create better, happier and more fulfilled lives, we create individuals that transform their lives and society, for the better.
